The Republican from Springfield, Massachusetts (2024)

Republican, February 21, 1999 I E11. Detectors keep watch on carbon monoxide By EDWARD R. LIPINSKI New York Times According to the American Medical Association, carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths in the United States. Each year, there are more than 10,000 cases of reported health injuries attributed to carbon monoxide exposure. During the winter months, the incidence of carbon monoxide poisoning rises because people remain indoors with the windows closed.

Since carbon monoxide is produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuels (natural gas, heating oils, gasoline, wood, kerosene), any malfunction in a heating or venting system can allow this deadly gas to enter into the home environment. Many victims are not even aware when they are exposed to carbon monoxide because it is a colorless, odorless gas, and the early stages of carbon monoxide poisoning produce flu-like symptoms: headaches, fatigue, nausea and dizziness. 2 The first step in preventing carbon monoxide poisoning in the home is to make sure that the heating system gets an annual tune-up by a qualified heating specialist. The tune-up should include burner cleaning and adjustment and, a darbon monoxide test. Even the most efficient burners will produce some carbon monox- ide, but this usually presents no health hazard because the combustion gases are expelled outside through the exhaust system.

Most home exhaust systems, 1: however, rely on the natural buoy. ancy of hot air to pull the exhaust gases outside; no fans are involved. The air that is expelled must be replaced by fresh air from the out-, side. Sometimes, in newer homes, problems develop because the structures are so tight that replacement air cannot enter. This causes the combustion gases to build up in the system and eventually drift into the living quarters.

The problem is exacerbated if the house is fitted with exhaust fans in the bathroom and over the f1 Safety experts point out that in 1992 more than 45 percent of the accidental carbon monoxide deaths were the result of auto exhausts entering the home through the garage. Other sources of carbon monoxide are a malfunctioning kitchen gas range, a smoldering fire in the fireplace and a cracked flue in the chimney. stove. A clothes dryer will also function like an exhaust fan when it is running. These fans force air out of the house, and if fresh replacement air is not pulled in from the outside, the fans will suck the combustion gases from the heating vent system back into the house.

This condition is known as "backdrafting." Carbon monoxide can also seep into the house through an attached garage when an automobile is warming up on a cold morning. Safety experts point out that in 1992 more than 45 percent of the accidental carbon monoxide deaths is were the result of auto exhausts entering the home through the garage. Other sources of carbon monoxide are a malfunctioning kitchen gas range, a smoldering fire in the fireplace and a cracked flue in the chimney. Because carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless, it may go undetected even when there are high concentrations in the air. You can protect your family by installing carbon monoxide detectors in the house.

These inexpensive devices (most sell for less than $60) are designed to sound an alarm when the carbon monoxide concentration becomes dangerously high (400 ppm for 15 minutes) or when low levels persist for more than 90. minutes. Detectors are available as battery-operated models or plug-in units. The plug-in units connect to a standard electrical outlet. An obvious drawback is that they are useless in the event of a power failure which is when people are most likely to turn to backup sources like woodstoves and kero-' sene heaters, both potential sources of carbon monoxide.

Battery-operated units are not affected by power failures, but you must replace the batteries periodically. The best line of defense is to install both types in your home. When purchasing a carbon monoxide detector, look for the Underwriters Laboratory Logo (UL) to make sure the model meets the official standard. Other important features include indicator lights: one that shows the unit is receiving power, and another light that glows when the alarm sounds. Battery-operated units should have an indicator light to show when the battery is weak.

Another important feature is a test and reset button, so used to make sure the unit is functioning properly. Install the detectors where they can be heard from the bedrooms even with the doors closed. For more complete protection, install detectors near potential sources of carbon monoxide the furnace, the kitchen range, the fireplace and the garage. Do not, however, install the detectors within 15 feet of fuel-burning appliances, and do not install them in potentially humid areas like the bathroom or laundry room. Unlike smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors should not be installed on the ceiling.

Instead they should be mounted on a wall at eye level (some companies offer table-top detectors), so you will notice and test them weekly. Be sure to carefully read the manufacturer's instructions so you can clean and maintain the detector properly. Times News Service Refinishing old tub with epoxy requires careful preparation brush or sponge. Scrub the tub repeatedly this is the most important step of the job.

If you fail to get the surface clean, the epoxy will peel off. After washing the tub, rinse it with clear water to remove the TSP. The next step is to sand the surface to break the glaze of the porcelain finish. Use 80-grit dry paper to wet sand the tub. Again, this must be a complete job any section left unsanded is a candidate for a peeling finish.

The final step is to apply the epoxy. This comes in a resurfacing kit that contains the necessary tools rollers and brushes plus the epoxy finish and instructions. Because professionals use heat to cure their epoxy finishes, they estimate that the new surface will hold up for as long as seven years. With a careful and complete cleaning and sanding job, you should get at least five years service from a refinished tub before the process has to be repeated. turning on when you open the door: The switch is bad, or the bulb is burned out.

Your first step should be to check the bulb. If the bulb's filament appears intact or a new bulb doesn't light when installed in the socket, chances are good that the light switch has failed. There are basically two switch types: plunger and rocker, but install in the same fashion, and it's an easy job. Write down the refrigerator's make and model number and locate an appliance store that has the part. Begin the repair by unplugging the refrigerator and inserting a putty knife between the switch and the refrigerator breaker trim.

Prevent marring the trim wrapping the putty knife with masking tape. Gently pry on one side, then the other until the locking tabs on the switch release. Disconnect the two wires on the old switch and connect them to the new switch. Press the new switch down until its locking tabs snap into position. Plug the refrigerator in, and test the switch.

With the refrigerator door open, the light should come on when the appliance is plugged back in. Press on the switch, and the light should go off. If it operates in reverse of this, you've accidentally reversed the switch wires. Associated Press tion and a stiff-bristle scrub causes for a refrigerator light not Q. We are fixing up our bathroom, and the biggest problem is our old tub.

Replacing the tub looks to be too big a job, and having it professionally refinished will cost us over $250. Is there a way we can refinish the tub ourselves? I A. You can buy a refinishing kit for about $75, but many people report a high failure rate with these kits. The problem lies in getting a good bond between the new epoxy coating and the old tub finish. To get the best bond, you must get the bathtub as clean as possible.

Although the tub's surface may appear to be smooth and unbroken, it actually has many tiny pores that collect dirt. The pros handle this problem by giving the tub a strong bath with industrial-strength acid. You can, however, get fairly good results by using a very strong solution of TSP (trisodium phosphate). It is available at paint dealers and home centers. Follow the directions for mixing a solution at the strength required for removing paint.

Wear eye protection and rubber gloves when using this solution. Clean the tub with TSP. solu- Personals 100 LITTLE KNOWN Federal Law stops Foreclosure, Debt tion Activity, Eviction Process, Automobile Repossession, Federal and State Tax Collection. Atty. Lafayette, 796-1270 or 1-800-447-7570.
