Matilda and Samuli Eriksson certainly raised some eyebrows when they got married because, as well as being husband and wife, the pair are also step-siblings.

Matilda, 24, from Finland shared her unconventional love story on TikTok, where the video quickly went viral, racking up millions of views.

According to Matilda, she never expected to marry until she met Samuli, 28. But the two quickly became close friends after their parents married in 2019.

However, it wasn’t until three years later, at Matilda’s mother’s 50th birthday party, in 2021, when they kissed for the first time.

‘At our parents cottage, that’s when our love journey began’ said Matilda. She says Samuli leant in for a kiss – and she didn’t hesitate to respond passionately.

‘There was definitely a build-up of tension in our first kiss, in a good way. But I thought it was wrong because it felt strange and unexpected.

‘I was both confused and in love, and I honestly didn’t know what to do,’ Matilda recalled.

But it’s safe to say that things certainly escalated.

‘After accidentally waking up next to each other, I told Samuli that nothing could ever happen, and we agreed to keep it our little secret,’ says Matilda. ‘That didn’t last.’

‘We were dating two weeks later, and he moved in with me. It felt nice and natural right away.’

Despite their deep connection, Matilda and Samuli knew their relationship would be met with judgment and criticism from the outside world.

While the pair are not biological siblings, they were aware of the stigma surrounding step-sibling relationships and knew that some people would find their love story strange.

At first, some of their friends were sceptical and judgmental, but Matilda’s mother encouraged her to follow her heart.

‘She told me to do whatever felt right at the time, to put everything else aside and follow my heart, and that led me to marry Samuli,’ Matilda shared. ‘We’ve both been in a few long relationships before, but we’ve never felt this way about anyone.’

A few months into their relationship, Matilda and Samuli started researching whether it would be legal for them to get married.

Unfortunately, when they Googled, the pair were met with a flood of false information and conflicting reports about the legality of their relationship. They were told that their marriage would be illegal in many countries and that they could face severe legal consequences if they attempted to tie the knot.

Overwhelmed, the couple turned to Matilda’s sister and her friend for help. Her friend is a law student, and she was able to provide the couple with some much-needed clarity on the matter.

According to Matilda’s sister, there was no legal barrier preventing them from getting married. While some countries may have laws prohibiting marriage between step-siblings, Finland was not one of them.

In fact, the couple were free to marry under Finnish law, just like any other couple – and they did exactly that.

Despite judgement, the couple remain commitment to each other. They’re now happily married and building their lives together.
